Welcome
The Whangarei Heads Pioneer Church, formally known as St James Church, has been a part of the Whangarei Heads Community since the late 1850s. Following the threat of a commercial sale in 2013 the Whangarei Heads Historic Church Protection Trust was formed, and the Church was purchased by the community and descendants of the early settlers to ensure it remained part of the fabric of the community for future generations.
The Whangarei Heads Pioneer Church has a rich history tied to the early settlers of the region. Built around 1859, it originally served as a Presbyterian church for the local community. Over time, it became a shared space for multiple congregations, reflecting the evolving religious landscape of Whangarei Heads. Today, the church is managed by a Community Trust, ensuring its preservation and continued use for weddings, funerals, and community gatherings.
